PROBLEM: A colleague told me of a case where the following error occurred during execution of a task sequence during Windows 7 deployment using MDT 2010:
“Failed to create an instance of COM progress UI object. Error code 0x80070015”
RESOLUTION: The error itself is cryptic and refers to the COM object TSProgressUI.exe, which displays the progress bar displayed during Lite Touch deployment. After trying different things, it was discovered that the problem was caused by corrupt installation files on the source ISO used to build the reference image.
TAKEAWAY: This story reminds me a bit of that old adage that you should start by rebooting your computer if you have problems with it. Corrupt installation files can produce all kinds of strange errors, so when troubleshooting a difficult deployment problem you might consider rebuilding your image from a fresh ISO if nothing else works.
