Windows 2000 ICS Host Installation

Before you install/configure ICS, I suggest that you first install the network on all systems and verify, that you have a working connection.
Then
define your Internet Connection, configure/verify the connection and test the connection.

Then, right-click on your desktop on "My Network Places" , select "Properties",
right-click on your Internet-connection and select again "Properties":

tab: Shared Access
Section "Shared Access"

by definition, connections
are not shared.
To enable connection sharing,
place the checkmark on
"Enable shared access to this connection"
activate the Sharing (place the checkmark)
(note the warning above the
checkmark about "interruption
of local network operations", see
the reason below)
and then also
enable (=place the Checkmark)
on "Enable on-demand dialing":
When this system is NOT connected
to the Internet and another systems
needs Internet access, this ICS HOST
will dial automatically.

tab: Options
To avoid disturbing the person
working on the ICS Host, minimize
any display of connection progress.

Also, define the Idle Time before
the connection will be terminated.

On selecting OK, you are advised:

The TCP/IP-address of your network card is changed to 169.254.0.1 , which has
been reserved by Microsoft for a Windows2000 ICS-Host
Also, a DHCP-server is activated for automatically assigning IP-address to ICS Clients.

The change is made without having to reboot, you can check the change by opening
a "Command Prompt" and entering "IPCONFIG":

Windows NT IP Configuration
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection

  Adapter Domain Name . . . . .:
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . .:
IP Address . . . . . . . .. . . . .:
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . .:
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . :

169.254.0.1
255.255.0.0

Don't ask me why: But when I configured another Windows2000 Prof. system for ICS, which
had been installed using 192.168.1.1 as TCP/IP-address, ICS did not assign 169.254.0.1, but
192.168.0.1 (as used by the
Windows98SE ICS ) :

I verified the IP-address by opening a "Command Prompt" and entering "IPCONFIG":

Windows NT IP Configuration
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection

  Adapter Domain Name . . . . .:
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . .:
IP Address . . . . . . . .. . . . .:
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . .:
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . :

192.168.0.1
255.255.255.0

It does not matter, which IP-address ( 169.254.0.1 or 192.168.0.1 ) is assigned to the ICS host,
just find out which one and check during the ICS-client installations, that the clients are gettings
an IP-address assigned on the same subnet ( 169.254.x.y or 192.168.0.x).

There are 2 locations to define "Idle Time before hangup/Disconnect":
- as part of the
Properties of the connection, tab Options
- as part of the Internet Options in the Control-Panel, tab: Connections, select your
connection and check "Settings" then "Advanced":

You also need to configure the ICS Clients.
