Installation of the Windows95/98 VPN-Client
 |
Install first
Dialup-Networking |
 |
On Windows95, it installs the
default Clients and Protocols,
to which you need to add the
TCP/IP-protocol for Internet
access. |

 |
If you are using Windows95,
please check first, that you
have the proper VPN-software
installed:
In the Network-applet, select
ADD, then select Adapter and
verify, that you see under the
manufacturer Microsoft the
"Microsoft Virtal Private
Network Adapter".
If that is NOT listed, you will
first need to download and
install the Dialup-Networking
Upgrade 1.2. |
 |
With Virtal Networking installed, the list in
the Network-applet becomes long, so I pasted
two together to get everything shown in one
picture.
by default, each protocol is bound to each
adapter.
|
 |
In my specific setup, I only need:
- the Client for Microsoft Networks
- the binding of TCP/IP to the Dialup-Adapter
(this will allow to connect to the Internet)
- the binding of NetBEUI to the VPN-adapter
(which is my protocol to connect to the
VPN-server in this example).
I deleted all other (not required) bindings |
In case, that you need to install all
components from scratch (on Windows95
or Windows98), it can be done step-by-step:
 |
Starting with nothing: |
 |
Add first the
Microsoft Dialup-Adapter |
 |
Add the TCP/IP-protocol
(to allow to connect to
the Internet).
Add the Client:
"Client for Microsoft Network"
(required in ANY case to save/
cache the Dialup-Networking
Passwords). |
 |
Now, add AGAIN
(a second time)
the
Microsoft Dialup Adapter.
It will get marked as:
Dialup-Adapter#2
(VPN support)
(sorry, this DUN upgrade does
still NOT allow two
simultaneus dialouts on
2 Modems to different targets) |
 |
Add the adapter: Microsoft
Virtual Private Networking
Adapter.
This will also install the
protocol/binding::
NDISWAN->Microsoft
Virtual Private Networking |
 |
Since I will connect to my
VPN-server via NetBEUI
protocol, I need to install now
NetBEUI-protocol. |
 |
I delete any not required
bindings:
- NetBEUI to Dialup-Adapter
(because that is using ONLY
TCP/IP to connect to the
Internet)
- TCP/IP on Dialup-Adapter#2
(because my VPN-server will
only accept incoming calls
on NetBEUI-protocol.
|
 |
That's it.
please continue with the next
item, configuring the workgroup. |
 |
In any case, make sure that your system is
in the same workgroup/domain as the
VPN-server |
 |
Let the system install all s/w components. |
 |
and it will need to restart. |
After the reboot, we are ready to setup your
dialup networking connections.
