SANTA CLARA, CA » 6/9/2008 » Citrix Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: CTXS), the global leader in application delivery infrastructure, today announced the first solution in the industry designed to provide highly scalable secure access to virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) environments. The newest release of the company's popular Citrix Access Gateway™ appliance now includes integration with Citrix XenDesktop™, allowing companies to deliver virtual desktops securely to thousands of end users based on their unique identity, location and security status. Unlike traditional virtual private network (VPN) and network access control (NAC) solutions which control access solely to the network, Citrix Access Gateway provides intelligent access directly to approved applications and desktops through its innovative SmartAccess technology, an increasingly important requirement as datacenter resources become more virtualized and physically separated from end users. By providing highly scalable secure access for virtual desktops, Citrix is making it easier for IT organizations to realize the tremendous security and cost reduction benefits that come from centralizing applications and desktops in the datacenter and delivering them virtually to end users in any location. The new Citrix Access Gateway 8.1 release accomplishes this by introducing the following key features: SmartAccess for Virtual DesktopsAccess Gateway's innovative SmartAccess technology allows IT departments to provide access to specific applications and data based on the user's identity, location and results of an end point analysis of the client device. Extending this capability to virtual desktops makes it easier for corporations to move to a delivered desktop model without compromising security or end user experience. Improved Scalability for Secure Virtual Desktop AccessAdding a highly scalable Access Gateway appliance in front of virtual desktops in the datacenter can dramatically enhance an organization's ability to
Brandon LeBlanc published on Windows Experience blog an announcement of Windows Search 4.0: Today we released the final version of Windows Search 4.0 to Microsoft Download Center. Windows Search 4.0 updates search in Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Home Server. This release comes after a public Windows Search 4.0 Preview, which was a success thanks to great community participation - with around 300,000 downloads. Since the Preview was released, a number of quality improvements have been made to the product based on feedback provided by the community. Download: Windows Search 4.0 for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 (x86) Download: Windows Search 4.0 for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 (x64) More download packages are available on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940157. So, what's new in this release? First and foremost: we've introduced some performance and reliability improvements. Queries are faster, as is indexing - how much faster depends on your machine and your data. Improved reliability means that system failures won't get in the way of the indexer and all of your data will be scanned and available for searches. We've also extended remote index discovery, also known as PC-to-PC searches, which allows data to be searched quickly and efficiently across machines running Windows Search 4.0. This means that Windows Vista-to-Windows XP or Windows Vista-to-Windows Server 2008 queries are now possible. Additionally, Windows Search 4.0 offers manageability improvements that IT Pros should take note of. For starters, we have extended Group Policy to control more aspects of search functionality and made this control more granular with per-user policies. You can use Group Policy Objects to control how desktop search accesses remote resources - such as Microsoft Exchange Server resources or file shares - to manage network utilization. Speaking of accessing Microsoft Exchange Server - if your organization s
SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif.-June 2, 2008-To meet the growing demand for higher-capacity, more efficient enterprise storage systems, Seagate (NYSE:STX) today introduced the Savvio® 10K.3 hard drive – the world's highest-capacity, small form factor 2.5-inch enterprise hard drive built for the demands of enterprise servers and storage arrays. This latest generation of 2.5-inch drive offers 70% lower power and greater than 60% performance density over traditional 3.5-inch drives. As the only 10K-rpm 2.5-inch enterprise design backed by two prior generations of field-proven reliability, the Savvio 10K.3 drive leads the industry with 300GB of capacity, reliability of 1.6 million hours MTBF, and an advanced SAS 2.0 (6Gb/sec data rate) interface. Seagate's Savvio 10K.3 drive is also the industry's first 2.5-inch self-encrypting enterprise drive with government-grade Full Disk Encryption (FDE) data protection. "The combination of higher capacity and 6Gb SAS on an enterprise-class small form factor disk drive, like the Savvio 10K.3 drive, continues to entice the industry to move from 3.5-inch to 2.5-inch based solutions for use in enterprise storage systems and arrays," said Dave Reinsel, vice president of Storage Research at IDC. "IDC predicts that shipments of small form factor enterprise drives into enterprise solutions will outnumber 3.5-inch enterprise drive shipments by 2010." Seagate's Savvio 10K.3 drive was built to accommodate a wide range of mainstream enterprise storage applications, where both high capacity and low power consumption are critical requirements within an IT organization. "Seagate was the pioneer of the 2.5-inch form factor enterprise standard, stemming from work with customers to better understand data center requirements, including the need for greater storage performance density, while continuing to focus on reducing power consumption and cooling costs," said Sherman Black, senior vice president and general manager, Seagate Enterprise Compute Business
