SAN JOSE , Calif. , January 3, 2006 - Hitachi Global Storage Technologies is today announcing availability of a new 1.8-inch hard drive with up to 80 gigabytes (GB) of storage capacity and an unmatched combination of features geared to the needs of consumer handheld devices. The Travelstar C3K80 is Hitachi's second-generation perpendicular magnetic recording hard drive, which is based on the industry-leading reliability established first on Hitachi's 2.5-inch Travelstar 5K160. With a 30-percent increase in storage capacity, a 20-percent decrease in power consumption and industry-leading shock protection, the Travelstar C3K80 addresses three of the most important requirements for consumer electronics today: ample room for storing music, video and other digital content, longer battery life and unbeatable ruggedness with 600 Gs of operating shock tolerance. The combination of these makes the new 1.8-inch hard drive from Hitachi especially suited for applications such as video-based MP3 players, digital camcorders, portable media players and handheld global positioning devices. "We believe the Travelstar C3K80 offers the strongest CE-package in a 1.8-inch hard disk drive due to its capacity, power consumption and shock performance," said Marcia Bencala, vice president, corporate strategy/product planning, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies. "We also have high confidence that the C3K80 will bring greater durability to consumer electronics as a result of the demonstrated reliability of Hitachi's perpendicular recording platform." The leading low-power consumption of the Travelstar is due in large part to a reduction of the disk spin-speed from 4200 RPM to 3600 RPM, which is one of the key changes to Hitachi's latest generation of 1.8-inch hard drives. The lower RPM on the C3K80 not only allows longer usage time for consumers, but also enables a 40-percent improvement in power-on-to-ready time over Hitachi's previous-generation 1.8-inch product. This means that the drive
VMware came up with a Beta program for the upcoming release of VMware Workstation 6. Here is just a small list of features taken from VMware Workstation 6 Beta Program home page: Support for Windows Vista - Use Windows Vista as host operating system Multiple monitor display - You can configure a VM to span multiple monitors, or multiple VMs to each display on separate monitors Integrated Virtual Debugger - Workstation integrates with Visual Studio and Eclipse so you can deploy, run, and debug programs in a VM directly from your preferred IDE Automation APIs (VIX API 2.0) - You can write scripts and programs to automate VM testing Headless mode - You can run VMs in the background without the Workstation UI You can find an extensive list of features, known issues and notes on VMware Workstation 6 Beta Release notes page. VMware Workstation 6 Beta is available for download after registration: http://register.vmware.com/content/beta/ws/registration.html . Version available for download has debugging enabled so it can be somewhat slow. Still it is fun because it has so many feature. Iomega Corporation (NYSE: IOM), a global leader in data storage and protection, today announced new versions of two of its versatile storage products: the high-end Iomega® UltraMax™ Desktop Hard Drive with expanded capacity to a towering 1TB*, and a new stylishly black small form-factor Iomega® dual interface Portable Hard Drive with 120GB** of storage capacity. Iomega® UltraMax™ Desktop Hard DriveDesigned for Mac® OS X users, Iomega's popular UltraMax Desktop Hard Drives deliver secure, high-capacity storage in a rugged enclosure that complements the Apple® Mac® Pro and Power Mac series of computers. With RAID 1 and a built-in FireWire and Hi-Speed USB (USB 2.0) hub for future expansion, Iomega's UltraMax Drives excel in digital content creation, graphic design, and other disk-intensive tasks. "Apple's Mac Pro is a thoroughbred personal computer that needs an external storage system that can keep pace," said Peter Wharton, Vice President of Marketing, Iomega Corporation. "With FireWire 800, the Mac HFS+ file system, and RAID 1 performance, Iomega's new UltraMax drive has incredible power right out of the box, and its interface choices and RAID options will enhance your workflow whether you're connecting it to Mac Pro, an iMac, or a MacBook." In addition to the default mode of RAID 0, which stripes data across the UltraMax drive's two 7200-RPM SATA hard drives, other drive settings include RAID 1, 'spanned' (both hard drives are treated as a single volume), and 'simple' (each hard drive is treated as its own drive letter). For ease of use, the new Iomega UltraMax Desktop Hard Drive has a manual RAID switch, allowing the user to turn off the RAID configuration and use the drive configured as JBOD. The Iomega UltraMax Hard Drive is preformatted with Apple's HFS+ file system for Mac OS X users. HFS+ makes more efficient use of large hard drives and supports journaling under Mac OS X, which makes it easier to recover data in case of a problem. The stackable UltraMax dr
Paris, December 18, 2006 - Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced the availability of the Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch 9800, the newest member of Alcatel-Lucent's award-winning family of 10-Gigabit Ethernet core switches that offer high-performance, high security, and enterprise-class availability at affordable prices. This chassis features twice the capacity of the Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch 9700. Also available are a new high-density 10-Gigabit Ethernet module and a new power-over-Ethernet (PoE) Gigabit Ethernet module. The Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch 9000 family is ideal for enterprise network administrators who require switches in their network core and aggregation layer to support large amounts of user data being consolidated for 10 Gigabit connections. Similar to the other OmniSwitch 9000 models, the Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch 9800 delivers wire-rate processing for IPv6/IPv4 and supports multicast applications, allowing businesses to benefit from these future trends at their own pace and at no extra cost. The Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch 9000s can also be used at the edge to support converged applications and deliver industry leading quality of service (QoS) for multi-media applications, voice-over-IP (VoIP), video collaboration and database applications. OmniSwitch 9000 switches anticipate and address future requirements at the network's edge with up to 384 ports of PoE-enabled 10/100/1000 Ethernet to the desktop. The OmniSwitch 9000s are part of Alcatel-Lucent's end-to-end enterprise switch family that includes stackable and modular edge switches, which use the Alcatel-Lucent Operating System (AOS) and Alcatel-Lucent's OmniVista Network Management System for simplified manageability, high availability, advanced security and quality of service (QoS) features, at a reduced total cost of ownership. "The Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch 9800 is ideal for use in the network core, however its strong security and power-over-Ethernet ports also make it ideal
