Unitrends’ enterprise-class data protection enables VMware to go head-to-head with Microsoft in the SMB market

Columbia, s.c. August 27, 2013 – Unitrends, the leading provider of all-in-one backup, archiving, instant recovery and disaster recovery solutions, today announced the availability of Unitrends Enterprise Backup™ Free Edition for the unlicensed (free) version of VMware® vSphere™ Hypervisor™. With this addition to its product portfolio, Unitrends is the only data protection provider to offer a free, automated, fully functioning backup and recovery solution for both the licensed and unlicensed versions of VMware vSphere Hypervisor. This industry-first solution also enables VMware to compete with Microsoft in the SMB market.

Unitrends Enterprise Backup, the company’s software-only backup and recovery virtual appliance, has supported VMware vSphere since its launch in June 2012. Now, in an industry first, the solution offers free backup and recovery functionality for the unlicensed version of VMware vSphere Hypervisor. While virtualization-focused backup vendors have struggled with the licensing restrictions on VMware’s vStorage APIs for Data Protection (VADP), Unitrends is able to provide support for the unlicensed version of VMware vSphere Hypervisor as a result of its Unified Data Protection™ architecture. This innovative and highly scalable architecture provides unified host- and guest-level data protection for both virtual and physical environments. The result is an enterprise-class data protection solution that provides backup and recovery, archiving, replication and virtualization failover functionality at no cost – an unprecedented offering in the industry.

“SMBs can now benefit from enterprise-class data protection for the free version of VMware vSphere Hypervisor at no cost to them whatsoever,” said Maria Pressley, Unitrends’ chief evangelist. “As the hypervisor battle heats up, this functionality enables VMware to go head-to-head with Microsoft in the SMB market. Unitrends Enterprise Backup isn’t simply a utility for running manual ad hoc backups either. It’s a fully functioning solution that includes automated scheduling, instant recovery, global deduplication and archiving, among other advanced backup and recovery features.”

Unitrends Enterprise Backup Free Edition for the unlicensed version of VMware vSphere Hypervisor is the latest innovation in a long list of industry firsts since the solution launched last year. Last Fall, Unitrends Enterprise Backup became the industry’s only native all-in-one Microsoft® Windows Server® 2012 Hyper-V® role and Hyper-V 2012 Server backup, archiving, instant recovery and disaster recovery virtual appliance. Unitrends was also the first provider to support Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V and VMware vSphere 5.1. The combination of its innovation, efficiency, ease-of-use and affordability has resulted in a high adoption rate of Unitrends Enterprise Backup in both VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V environments, with more than 30,000 downloads since June 2012.
