Microsoft has released a tool that helps you check whether your computer supports Windows 8 or not. Let alone, the sales pitch behind this tool, I would just run it for compatibility reasons before taking any decisions to upgrade my system. It might save you a lot of trouble afterwards!

Clicking Can my PC run Windows 8? installs Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant, which makes sure your PC can run Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro and gives you the option to purchase either. When prompted by your browser, open, save, or run Upgrade Assistant. Depending on your Internet connection, Upgrade Assistant might take several minutes to install.
