Dialing out via DUN to the Internet

Once the Connection has been configured properly, you are ready to dial:

On selecting "Dial", you need
to define your "User-Name"
and your Password.
You should "hear" now
your modem trying to
connect.....
If you defined a Script,
then that script will now
take over and send to your
ISP the User-name and password.
You are connected !
To avoid to get this screen
on future connections, you can
put a check-mark on both
options.

The Internet is based on the "TCP/IP"-protocol, and with the huge number of systems out there, it is important to have a working "DNS: Domain Name Service", so lets check it out by using the "TCP/IP"-utility "ping":

In this example, I "ping" my WebSite server "ourworld.compuserve.com".
TCP/IP works out via DNS, that the IP-address is : 149.174.213.37, so :
DNS is working !
Also, the TCP/IP connection to the Internet-server is up-and-running, because we are getting the ping-reply (this test can be made with ANY Internet server !)

In your Taskbar, look at the icon for "Dial-Up networking Monitor"
Right-click and call up the "Monitor":
The "Dial-Up Networking Monitor"
shows now the Statistics:
- transferred data

The tab:"Summary" shows all
active connections (do not forget:
NT can handle MULTIPLE
simultaneous connections).

The Button "Details" shows
you the IP-address, which was
assigned to your system for this
connection by the DHCP of your ISP.

Once you are finished "surfing" the Internet:
Do NOT forget to hang-up:
Right-Click on the taskbar-icon and select to
hang-up your connection.

To make it quicker to get to the Dial-Up connection icon, you can create a short-cut to it on the Desktop:

That's it: Happy Internet Surfing !
